  • 18-10-2016 - TimeNorfolk’s Loss of a Baby Awareness Day course held at GreenAcres Colney during Baby Loss Awareness Weekarrow

75 healthcare professionals and funeral directors recently received free training to promote understanding around baby loss from TimeNorfolk, the pregnancy loss charity, in partnership with GreenAcres Colney.

The day-long Loss of a Baby Awareness Day course was held at GreenAcres Colney (formerly GreenAcres Woodland Burials – Colney) on Monday 10th October, during Baby Loss Awareness Week.

Delegates from across the county heard talks and presentations from TimeNorfolk staff and past clients, and staff from Rosedale Funeral Home, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, and the NNUH Chaplaincy.

Bob and Tracey McGurrell of the charity 4Louis travelled from Tyne & Wear to demonstrate their memory boxes, which they provide free of charge to bereaved parents who suffer a stillbirth or neonatal death. Attendees were also given a tour of the GreenAcres Colney woodland.

The aim of the day was to improve awareness and understanding of the issues around the death of a baby, bringing professionals from many different organisations together to share best practice.

The Loss of a Baby Awareness Day is based on a course that GreenAcres Epping host twice a year, which was developed by Andrea Brewis, Team Leader of the Child Death Review Rapid Response Service at Harlow’s Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Lesley Bradfield, Head of Operations at TimeNorfolk was inspired to develop a similar course local to Norfolk, with Andrea Brewis’ blessing, after attending Andrea’s course when it visited GreenAcres Colney in 2015.

Lesley said: “After attending last year’s Baby Loss Awareness Day at GreenAcres, I felt that the day represented the work we do at TimeNorfolk. My idea was we could bring our experience from TimeNorfolk to a day and share our knowledge with others. Through bringing guest speakers in and delivering our own presentations we were able to promote best practice for those professionals involved with parents bereaved by the loss of a baby.

GreenAcres Colney offered free use of their Woodland and Gathering Halls and provided administrative support and delegate packs for the day. Lunch for delegates was sponsored by Gordon Barber Funeral Directors.

Delegates have the opportunity to talk with bereaved parents and explore in a safe environment effective communication with bereaved families and gain a further understanding of the parents on-going journey when they leave hospital. Discussion took place throughout the day with extensive networking and delegates participated in workshops to share experiences and reflective practice.”

GreenAcres Chiltern offered free use of their Woodland and Gathering Halls and provided administrative support, delegate packs and refreshments for the day.

Following the success of the Death of a Baby Study Day in Epping, Andrea and her team have now extended into the Norwich and Beaconsfield areas. Working with GreenAcres Colney and GreenAcres Chiltern, it’s hoped many more will be rolled out across the group.

The team at GreenAcres Woodland Burials – Colney, is delighted to have achieved the prestigious Green Flag Award from Keep Britain Tidy for the 6th year running and is very proud to belong to such a select group of green spaces. This Award recognises and highlights that people in Norfolk are benefiting from a green space of the very highest quality and although our main focus is on providing a final resting place that offers beauty and tranquillity in native meadow and woodland, this award proves that we are very much a place for everyone to visit and enjoy.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said:

“We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme. All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”

The announcement of this year’s Award winners comes in the same week that thousands of people up and down the country are enjoying Love Parks Week (July 24 to August 2), an annual celebration of our country’s fantastic green spaces and the community groups that bring them to life.

We pride ourselves on managing the woodland as a safe haven for wildlife as well as a beautiful place to lay loved ones to rest. Our woodland staff take part in regular wildlife surveys including birds, moths, and butterflies, submitting the results to the relevant conservation bodies. The woodland habitat is managed to the benefit of wildlife, involving the development of new ponds, an orchard, brash piles and many other little spaces for the woodland’s inhabitants.
