Mallard’s at Rainford

Sunday 11th June 2017

Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)

A common site at Greenacres, the mallard can be found by ponds around the park. The male is very distinctive with a yellow bill, green head, a white collar, purple breast and grey wings and back whereas the female is a more nondescript brown. Mallards are a familiar site in even urban environments where they thrive due to the abundance of ponds, canals and other areas of water and the availability of food.

Fun fact: Female mallards perform the quintessential duck quack when summoning there ducklings, it is loud enough to be heard for miles.
